Taking Care of
Business
Natural systems provide a wealth of tangible and intangible services to
business -- some $33 trillion worth of "free" deliverables a
year, say experts. Those services include fertile soil, fresh water,
breathable air, pollination, species habitat, soil formation, pest control,
a livable climate, and a host of other things most companies take for
granted.
A new
report urges companies to pay closer attention to the value of these
services, lest they suffer “major economic losses.” The study indicates
that many companies recognize the risks associated with degrading
ecosystems and are trying to adapt accordingly, but most fail to associate
healthy ecosystems with their business interests.
This is the latest of a series of initiatives on this topic. A few months
ago, for example, we reported on a new
effort by Business for Social Responsibility to help businesses
understand and address the world of ecosystem services, and an accompanying
report describing market mechanisms being used by companies to protect
ecosystem services.
It all amounts to a question issue of growing importance to companies: If
ecosystems are so valuable to companies’ operations, how much should they
be willing to invest in their continued health? That is, what’s a clean
earth worth to your company?

Business
For many companies, shipping -- whether raw materials or finished goods --
represents the largest portion of their carbon footprint. But the climate
imprint of the shipping industry is only recently getting its due. That’s
understandable: Businesses that rely on products being moved from one place
to another have been able to do little to change the performance of truck,
rail, and marine cargo companies. Moreover, cargo companies haven't been on
most environmental activists' radar screens.
But that’s changing. Led by U.S. freight haulers Fedex
and UPS,
both of which have developed cleaner, more efficient trucks, the rest of
the industry is falling into the green-vehicle convoy. This week, we report
on a new
service to help small shippers reduce their footprint, and a two-year
collaborative study between the trucking industry’s trade association
and the U.S. Energy Department. The goal: save nearly a billion gallons of
fuel a year.
That’s also Wal-Mart’s goal. The retail giant has committed to doubling the
fuel efficiency of its truck fleet within 10 years, part of its newfound
commitment to greening
its stores and operations. In doing so, Wal-Mart could add $50 million
a year to its income.
That’s a big haul, indeed.

Last week’s Business
for Social Responsibility annual conference brought together 1,200
corporate responsibility types, mostly from large companies, to ponder the
state of the art -- and the future -- of their field. As is increasingly
the case, a variety of organizations used the event to launch their own
reports and initiatives.
And so we have The
Conference Board’s survey of 198 medium to large multinational
companies, stating that that corporate citizenship and sustainability are
major sources of business opportunity and not only sources of business risk
alone. And an annual corporate
reporting award handed out by the U.K. consultancy SustainAbility. That
organization also issued
a report on the state of the art of corporate reporting, produced with
UNEP and Standard & Poor’s. It found that the field of reporting is
“extremely dynamic,” with new entrants publishing high-quality reports.
This is encouraging. As reporting rises ever higher in the corporate
consciousness -- in response to demands for transparency on everything from
climate impacts to community involvement -- the need for better reporting
will grow. To help, we’ve created a small resource
center on the topic that can help you learn who’s reporting what, and
how they’re doing it.
